What is trans?

trans is now in its third year and features a multitude of events embracing new trends, art forms, cultures and technologies. During a four week period, trans hosts a programme of gigs, free seminars, courses, exhibitions and broadcasts its own radio station.

The Urban Arts Academy is the biggest project and is now in its 5th year. All the courses featured on this website are part of the Urban Arts Academy.

About the organisers

trans and the Urban Arts Academy are organised and managed by Belfast Waterfront Hall. The Waterfront Hall is a Belfast City Council owned conference and concert centre.

This year’s Urban Arts Academy will be returning to the Waterfront. All management, organisation and bookings will be managed by the Waterfront Hall.

Our ideology

Culture is constantly evolving and re-inventing itself. Therefore…

- We invest in new technologies, new trends, new art forms and new artists
- We provide training in career paths which the current system does not
- We encourage debate outside traditional politics
- We demonstrate that Urban Arts should not be confined to Youth Culture
- We bring the world to Belfast and Belfast to the world

FAQs

Urban Arts Academy…trans… what’s the relationship?
UAA was set up in 2005 to deliver training in the urban arts, trans on the other hand was set up afterwards because there was more we wanted to do that wouldn’t fit into the terms of an Urban Arts Academy. So UAA is a part of what trans does, it is the biggest project in trans, but trans also runs other stuff like gigs, seminars and exhibitions.
Also trans is based firmly on ideology. By this we mean that there are basic beliefs we have which are central to everything we do. These ideas can be seen in the trans mission here.

What is the minimum and maximum age for students to attend the Urban Arts Academy?
There is no upper age limit but you must be at least 15 years of age. We have students of all ages, shapes and sizes.

How do I register for a course?
Tickets are available through the Waterfront Box Office on 028 9033 4455 from Monday to Saturdays 9.00am – 5.00pm, over the counter at the Waterfront or by e-mailing boxoffice@waterfront.co.uk

Can I just turn up for the course on the first day without a ticket?
Sure, if there are places left. However we expect many of the courses to be sold out so it might be best to check availability on the above number.

Can I apply for more than one course?
Yes, you can apply for as many courses as you wish as long as they do not clash.

What happens if I can’t afford the course?
You should apply for a bursary (that’s where you get to do the course for free). To apply download and return Bursary Application form.

What time will the courses and seminars be taking place?
Most of the courses run from 10am to 5pm each day, unless otherwise stated

Will there be food provided?
No, but there are plenty of places to buy lunch in and around the Waterfront Hall, and plenty of areas where a packed lunch can be eaten.

Will I need to bring my own equipment?
Mostly no… although for the rock music course we are assuming that you will bring your own, but we can provide you with equipment if you need it. Also for the new film course we would like you to use your own equipment so that you can apply the things you learn after you have finished the course, although again this is not a requirement. Finally it may be a good idea to check with the Urban sports crew if you need to barrow a skateboard or bike.

What is the age limits to the gigs and events?
With certain gigs and events there will be a restricted age limit due to licenses in venues. Please check with our Box Office at the time of booking, 028 9033 4455.

Is there accreditation for the courses?
Not this year, but watch this space.

Will it have appropriate supervision?
See trans Child Protection Policy.

What are your facilities for individuals with disabilities? And are there any limits to any of the courses?
See trans Disability Policy.
