Martha Colburn and Logikparty

Friday, June 4th, 2010

To launch the Danse Macabre exhibition in Catalyst Arts, stop motion animator Martha Colburn will be collaborating with Dublin based Logikparty in a one off performance in the Penthouse Bar in the Waterfront. The band will be playing a set accompanied by two live 16mm film projections from the filmmaker.

Logikparty is a Dublin based four-piece creating music that is aggresive, atonal and austere, influenced by bands like Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Bush Tetras and James Chance and the Contortions and more great things. They’ve just released their first limited edition 7″ on White Plague Records. With repetitive locked-groove rhythms, agitated vocals and abrasive guitars, their sound takes its cue from the art-punk and no-wave movements of the late 70s and early 80s. Fear and delight in equal measures….

In her work Martha Colburn utilizes the language and materials of filmmaking to comment on popular culture, consumerism, politics and sexuality. Through a collage of live action (paint-on-glass) animations, found footage and documentary filmmaking techniques, her stop motion animation films are a disturbing and at times humorous take on popular and political culture. Complementing her films, she creates elaborately layered collages, paintings, and installations that incorporate transparencies, recordings, and live performances.

She has created pieces to accompany the San Francisco-based band Deerhoof’s song “Wrong Time Capsule” in 2005 and Serj Tankien’s “Lie, Lie, Lie” in 2007, as well as an animation for the 2005 documentary about the musician Daniel Johnston entitled ‘The Devil and Daniel Johnston’. Most recently she appeared at All Tomorrow’s Parties curated by the Flaming Lips in NY alongside Deerhoof.

Paul Pilot

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Paul Pilot first graced the Irish music scene as singer/guitarist in The Amazing Pilots. The debut album, Hello My Captor, was critically hailed and the single, The Price of Winter, was playlisted across Irish radio. Following the demise of this band, Paul stepped into a production role for other artists. Triumphs have included none other than Duke Special as well as singing sensation Beth Rowley. According to Paul ‘a strange wind had blown through my world’ and the time had come for his first solo release – I Want This To Be Easy For You. Sounding somewhere between Merle Travis and Mark Linkous it is at once joyful and heartfelt.

Amy McGarrigle & Band

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Fusing interlocking guitars and a sinewy rhythm section, this isn’t quite rock music…isn’t quite folk…but weaves its web around you as you stand transfixed by the soaring voice of Amy McGarrigle. Already creating a buzz locally for their intricate but powerful live performances, this set of musical voyagers can only continue to break new ground in their quest for something fresh.

Any (or none) of these could feature in the multimedia-all-star-event that is THE NEW IMPROVED REALLY HARD MUSIC QUIZ ON ICE*.

Tom McShane

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

This summer, Belfast based singer/songwriter Tom McShane and producer Rocky O’Reilly (Start Together Studio) throw open the doors and invite fans to witness first hand and take part in the creation of Tom’s next record. Fear not though; this will not be the repetitive and laboured process of endless over-dubs and recording trickery. This instead will be a dynamic and exciting live performance modelled on old school recording techniques of the 50’s & 60’s.

Two open-studio recording sessions will be held on 3 July. During each session the album will be performed in its entirety, with each song being performed only once per session. The best take of each song will be selected for the final cut of the record.

Tickets for this event are strictly limited. The ticket price not only admits fans to one of the recording sessions for this special one-off event but also includes a pre-order of the finished album which will be mailed to them as soon as the album has been mixed, mastered and pressed. Each ticket holder will be credited in the liner notes and receive special individual copy that will display their name.

Become part of the discussion that shapes the development of this record by visiting www.tommcshane.co.uk and joining Tom’s mailing list to have your say in everything from album art to the album’s title and receive demo versions of the album’s tracks as pre-production progresses.

Big Laughs at the Waterfront

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Big Laughs Belfast is a stand-up comedy collective based in Northern Ireland. Dedicated to nurturing fresh talent, Big Laughs is at the heart of Belfast’s emerging comedy scene and now brings to you some of it’s rising stars, success stories and a special guest headliner for a fun-packed night at the Waterfront.

Bearded funster, Adam Laughlin has been winning over audiences since 2007 and earning a firm favourite slot in many clubs, and hearts, with his inimitable style. Expect well-constructed gags, bizarre and surreal set pieces, an unending energy and an undeniably hilarious stage presence.

Graeme Watson is a lovely, winsome chap who grew up in a small village near Larne, but who usually pretends he didn’t (until pressed). A resident MC at Big Laughs Comedy Open Mic Night in Belfast’s Pavilion Bar, Graeme is also a favourite on the local circuit, teasing audiences with his intelligent whimsy and self-deprecating musings about life.

George Quinn shambled onto the comedy scene to much acclaim in 2008, with his eclectic mix of the sublime and ridiculous. A professional magician who has now taken his love of physical comedy, bizarre prop work and rambling musings into the field of stand-up, George has been winning audiences over with a visual, quirky act executed by a likeable and accessible performer. He has performed all over the UK including the Edinburgh Festival, Empire Comedy Club, Voicebox and is one of the resident MCs at Big Laughs @ the Big House.

The Lap Off

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

The Lap Off is the oldest event in the trans calendar; and for the most part still our favourite. Eight Lap Off musicians throw their soundcards in the ring for the ultimate battle of mouse mat mastery and only one will emerge victorious, able to lay claim to the title of Lap Off Champion for 2010.

It’s a pretty simple concept: we set up each competitor with a mixing desk and two phono ports. It doesn’t matter what other bits of kit they put into their laptop – keyboards, vocals, chaos pad, guitar, anything really. So long as the output comes from the laptop and into our phono input it’s allowed. Each round sees two brave souls face off for ten minutes each. The judges’ and crowd reaction decides who goes though to the next round.

Reigning champion, Space Dimension Controller, has shows this Summer at Sonar and Fabric, not to mention regular appearances at Shine and the Stiff Kitten – the standard is always high as are the entertainment levels.

Classical Music unBound

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

A club night with strings attached Belfast.

UnBound releases classical music from the confines of the concert hall and brings it into the nightclub. If you thought classical music wasn’t for you, this night could prove you wrong.

Our DJs will be mixing up classical music – no chart hits in the club tonight, just pure classical music without any rules. We’ll be mixing Mozart, chopping Chopin and back- beating Bach, while a live string quartet will be keeping it ‘old school’ with two centuries of classical favourites.

No need to sit stiffly appreciating the cadences – have a drink, chat, chill, or make some moves to the best that the dead beats left behind.

Meshes of the Afternoon

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Meshes of the Afternoon is one of the most influential works in American experimental cinema. A non-narrative work, it has been identified as a key example of the trance film, in which a protagonist appears in a dreamlike state, and the camera conveys his or her subjective focus. The central figure in Meshes of the Afternoon, played by Deren, is attuned to her unconscious mind and caught in a web of dream events that spill over into reality. Symbolic objects, such as a key and a knife, recur throughout the film; events are open-ended and interrupted. Deren explained that she wanted “to put on film the feeling which a human being experiences about an incident, rather than to record the incident accurately.”

The Night of The Hunter

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Described by Laughton as a “nightmarish Mother Goose”, this profoundly disturbing psychodrama marked both the beginning and the end of his career as a director. Driven by a performance by Robert Mitchum that goes a long way to defining on-screen evil, both tone and tale are absolutely compelling throughout.

The central story follows psychopathic preacher, Harry Powell, as he searches obsessively for $10,000 hidden by a condemned convict. Marrying then murdering the dead man’s wife, he swiftly turns his attention to her kids, pursuing them to a conclusion of mythical proportions.

Drawing on sources as diverse as German Expressionism and rural American fable, this is a strange, tense and at times dream-like film that still sends a shiver down the spine.

We Call it Skweee

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

In 2005 a new electronic sound coming out of Scandinavia known only as Skweee was shared with the world. The founding labels Harmonia and Flogsta Danshall quickly built up an international cult following with an interest in fun and fresh electronic music revitalised by the funky lo-fi squeaks and bleeps coming from the cold reaches of Finland and Sweden.

With ‘We call it Skweee’ Italian film director, Iacopo Patierno alongside Skweee artist Joxaren (David Giese) perfectly capture the growth of this exciting scene from its infancy, culminating in footage from what is considered by many to be the defining moment in the brief history of Skweee, the much talked about headlining set at one of the world’s leading electronic music festivals – Sonar.

“We call it Skweee is a foreigner’s view on a culture form that in many ways mirrors what I understand as typically Scandinavian”, says Iacopo.

THX 1138 – vers:on

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Experienced DJ/VJ team Pete Donaldson and Ed Hughes have rebuilt George Lucas’s first film, THX 1138, with contemporary audio and video tools and are performing it live, retaining the atmosphere and loose narrative of the original.

THX 1138, LUH 3417, and SEN 5241 attempt to escape from a futuristic totalitarian society located beneath the surface of the Earth. The society has outlawed sex, with drugs used to control the people. THX 1138 stops taking the drugs and becomes aware of his social programming and proceeds to challenge his place in the machine that is modern society.

THX 1138 was remade in 1971 and has become a cult hit amongst sci-fi fans.

It was recently re-released as the definitive director’s cut. It is this iconic, classic ‘version’ that Donaldson and Hughes have chosen to de-construct and re-build.

Electroma

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Daft Punks Electroma tracks the odyssey of two robots on their quest to become human. The journey takes them across a hauntingly beautiful dystopian American landscape from endless highways to deserted towns. This innovative film will strike a chord with film fans and music fans alike as it transcends both even without the use of music the directors create a surreal moving painting. The film is a masterpiece of metaphor and a brave attempt at a new direction in cinema.

Argento Double Bill: Deep Red & Opera

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Dubbed ‘Master of Horror’ and ‘Godfather of Gore,’ cult director Dario Argento has made some of the most important and controversial horror movies in cinematic history. Argento’s feverishly violent films – explicit, atmospheric
and nightmarish – exhibit a level of artistry rarely seen in horror cinema.

Considered by many to be Argento’s finest film, Deep Red is the startling tale of a musician (David Hemmings) who witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic, and sets out to snare her killer.

Opera is often considered as the director’s last great film, and is also his bleakest work – a serial killer becomes infatuated with a young opera singer in this tale of obsession and sadistic desire.

James Gracey, who published a comprehensive look at cult director Dario Argento earlier this year, will give a short introduction to the films. James has written for Film Ireland, Alternative Ulster, Paracinema and Culture Northern Ireland.
He has also contributed to Drowned in Sound, Twisted Ear and Eat My Brains.

Le Donk & Scorz-ayz-ee

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

An hilarious exercise in low (almost no) budget film making and shot in only 5 days, Shane Meadows’ latest film is a mockumentary following the day to day life of Le Donk, failed father, second-rate roadie, aspiring music mogul and one of the most monstrously funny characters you will ever see on the big screen.

Sporting a truly ludicrous wig and woolly hat, Paddy Considine is Le Donk, whose ego and capacity for self-delusion are sadly unmatched by actual talent. Donk’s side-kick is a chubby but seriously talented white rapper, Scorz-ayz-ee (playing himself).

With appearances from Meadows himself (as a cameraman offering advice on Le Donk’s tragic love life) and the Arctic Monkeys, Le Donk & Scorz-ayz-ee is huge fun to watch. It’s also pretty clear that all involved had a great time making it!

White Lightnin’

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Jaw droppingly bonkers but also kind of great, this is a wildly grotesque fantastical biography of the Appalachian mountain dancer Jesco White.

Some people spend their whole lives running from who they really are; fuelled by moonshine and lighter fuel, Jesco (a wild eyed Edward Hogg) uses tap dancing to keep his demons at bay. White Lightnin’ is a phantasmagoric tumble into the dark corners of artistic genius, addiction, and insanity that is set to an aptly kinky soundtrack. A true original; gory and shocking with a whirlwind energy.

Harpoon: Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Iceland…and you thought it was only good for Björk, bad debt and pesky volcanoes. Well think again because trans and QFT are proud to present Iceland’s first foray into the exploitation horror genre – Harpoon: Reykyavik Whale Watching Massacre!

A motley crew of sightseers and low-lifes set out on a whale watching expedition; so far so predictable. When a freak accident occurs and they are stranded at sea things take a turn for the worse; especially when they are rescued by a family of tourist-hating ‘fishbillies’…
If the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was set on a fishing boat this would be the result!

Bronco Bullfrog

Monday, May 24th, 2010

This seminal cult film of the late 1960s is one of the finest records of Mod culture in British cinema.

Perfectly capturing the mood and Mod- influenced style of working class 60’s London, Barney Platts-Mills’ film about 17 year old eastender Del and his gang was critically acclaimed on its release in 1970. Performed by an entirely non-professional cast, Platts-Mills encouraged the actors to improvise and devise a story based on events taken from their own lives. The result is a uniquely authentic piece of British cinema and a wonderful time capsule of late 60’s London.

Come down early as the steady generation will be launching with some Mod tunes from 2pm
